Samuel Umtiti, the most expensive centre-back in the world
Per a CIES Football Observatory study the defender is now worth 99.2 million euros
Each month the CIES Football Observatory looks at the value of the players in Europe's five biggest leagues. Despite being injured, Samuel Umtiti is now the world's most valuable centre-back, at a price of 99.2 million euros. 75m more than Barca paid for him in July 2016.
The Frenchman's fine displays have been a nice surprise for Barca fans over the past two years. Umtiti arrived as a bet for the future from Barca's technical staff, quickly becoming an important player in the present. In his first campaign he played as much as Gerard Pique did.
Behind him are Tottenham's Davinson Sanchez, Chelsea's Antonio Rudiger, Man City's Aymeric Laporte and Liverpool's Virgil Van Dijk. Raphael Varane of Real Madrid is eighth.
Elsewhere Kylian Mbappe is top with a value of 216.5m euros. Behind him are Harry Kane, Neymar, Mo Salah and Coutinho. Messi is sixth with a value of 170.6m euros.
Marc Andre ter Stegen is the second most expensive goalkeeper at 99.1m, behind Man City's Ederson.
