Sad news for Lionel Messi as first coach passes away in Rosario
The man who was in charge of a young Messi at Newell's Old Boys died on Thursday
Ernesto Vecchio, the first coach Leo Messi had as a youngster at Newell's Old Boys, sadly passed away on Thursday. Ernesto Vecchio was 65 and was found in his home in Rosario.
Born in 1951, he will be remembered as the manager who Messi spent most years with at Newell's before he signed for Barcelona and went on to become the best player in the world.
The death of Vecchio is likely to have an affect on Messi, given that until the previous day he had been managing two youth teams at Leones FC, part of Leo's Foundation. In addition, Newell's Old Boys also been lamented the passing of Vecchio.
"We regret the death of Ernesto Vecchio -- teacher at Malvinas and Leo Messi's coach in his early days -- our condolences to his family," said the Argentine club, with whom Messi maintains a good relationship, on their official Twitter account.
