The Dutchman offers experience, energy and the chance to rotate

Georginio Wijnaldum’s name has been linked to Barcelona for some time. Here we look at why Ronald Koeman wants to bring him to the club.

CHEAP

The coach knows that signings must fit not only sporting specifications but economic criteria too. The club is in a delicate moment, financially speaking. Wijnaldum would arrive on a free and at a lower salary level than he might receive elsewhere. It would also give Barca more room elsewhere for spending.

EXPERIENCE

The Dutchman is of a profile different to any currently at the club. An international with Holland, he works hard in the middle and always runs box to box. He works well in defence and also drives at the right time in opposing areas - he hit two against Barcelona at Anfield. He also is good at both ends when it comes to defending or attacking set pieces. Koeman thinks the experience of Wijnaldum will form a perfect balance with emerging talents - Pedri, Riqui Puig, Ilaix…

PIVOT

Although the Liverpool player can feature in various midfield roles, Koeman thinks he works best in the pivot. That means he won’t stop young players coming through and can be a more energetic alternative to Sergio Busquets.

COMPETITION

Wijnaldum’s arrival won’t make him a regular, necessarily. Koeman wants him to increase internal competition and help rest key players to keep everyone fresh. Busquets, but also Frenkie de Jong and Pedri. The trio have had to play virtually every game possible this season.
