The Portuguese side have been in touch to ask about a season-long loan

Porto are weighing up asking Barcelona to take Riqui Puig on loan for the 2020-21 season, according to a report in Portuguese newspaper Record.

The club feel the midfielder represents a great opportunity after learning that Barça coach Ronald Koeman has told him he would be better served on loan.

Koeman explained to Puig that he could not guarantee him minutes at the club this season in his new 4-2-3-1 formation, a switch from last season's 4-3-3 under Ernesto Valverde and Quique Setien.

Porto's decision-makers, led by coach Sergio Conceiçao, believe Puig would be a good addition to the squad before the transfer deadline next week.

Puig has so far resisted the urge to leave Barça and stressed that he would prefer to stay with the B team and continue training with Koeman's side in a bid to prove the coach wrong.

Porto are the champions of Portugal and will be competing in the Champions League this season, so Puig would be afforded a good platform to express his talent, in principle on loan.

While Barça would be open to the deal, it remains to be seen how Puig would react. He's always been desperate to succeed at Camp Nou.
