A study by the CIES Football Observatory values City's squad at €1,036 million

The CIES Football Observatory has presented its annual report into the most expensive squads in Europe's five biggest football leagues.

Manchester City top the table having invested 1,036 million euros into their current squad. That's 22 million more than the previous year's study revealed.

Even though their squad is still worth less than their Manchester rivals, Manchester United's squad's transfer cost went up 93 million euros in comparison to September 2019, from 751 million to 844 million.

United have closed the gap, therefore, on second-placed Paris Saint-Germain (888 million, 25 million less than last year) and jumped ahead of Real Madrid (708 million, a drop of 194 million) into third place.

Barcelona's squad cost 826 million, which places them fourth in the rankings, which are dominated by the Premier League. Juventus, in eighth, are the fourth non-English club in the top 10. Atletico Madrid are 11th.

BAYERN MUNICH: NOT JUST ABOUT MONEY

The report shows that football is about more than money. The current European champions, Bayern Munich, are 15th with an investment of 408 million euros in their current squad. Despite spending nearly half what Europe's other big clubs have spent on players, the german side still won their second-ever treble last season.

They have since won the German Super Cup and the European Super Cup, too, and if they win the Club World Cup they will match Barça's famous 2009, when the Catalan club won six trophies. No other club has managed that so far.
