The forward is still maintaining that he is able to leave the club on a free transfer

Leo Messi was scheduled to arrive at 10:15 (local time) at the Ciutat Esportiva to undergo his PCR test. Instead, he failed to appear and looks determined to force his way out of FC Barcelona.

The Argentinian star has told the club he wants to leave and is activating the 'exit clause' in his contract. His legal team advised him not to attend as it would prejudice his position.

Barça, in contrast, insist he is still under contract and therefore obligated to appear like everyone else in the senior squad.

No turning back

Despite the fact Messi sent a burofax informing the club he would leave, Barça were expecting him to turn up and not risk facing disciplinary proceedings. However it's since been confirmed that he didn't appear and is now classed as going AWOL.

If Leo fails to appear tomorrow, then the sanctions can start to become much more severe. Of course he won't be able to train alongside his teammates on Monday if he hasn't successfully passed the PCR test.

First training session on Monday

Ronald Koeman and his staff are scheduled to hold their first training session on Monday, assuming there is no bad news from the round of PCR testing. The Dutchman said Messi was a key part of his new project but everything now suggests Leo won't play a role in it next season.

It's still possible Messi could appear later today to pass the PCR test and then be free to join up for training tomorrow. However, that is looking less and less likely by the hour.
