Javier Mascherano explodes against the criticism he has been given

The defender didn't hold back when it was suggested he gives away a lot of penalties

Barcelona's Javier Mascherano celebrated his 300th appearance for the club in the win against Borussia Monchengladbach.

But beyond that game, the defender has become the focus of attention for another reason after he defended himself against criticism from the Madrid press. The player exploded when speaking on Atresmedia at one question in particular.

"Do you give away a lot of penalties?" he was asked. And he replied: “I haven’t given away too many. I think some of them I have given away, but not others. According to the geniuses that commentate on television, though, I give them all away."

The 32-year-old added: "It’s easy to comment with slow motion replays, keeping in mind there are thousands of images and a thousand angles."

But he made it clear the external criticism will not affect Barça internally. "We don't focus on what they say, we've been with Luis Enrique for two and a half years now and we've got results."

And in a dose of humility, he said: "Of course I am not peferct, I commit a lot of errors and I accept that. It's a game of success and error. Many times I've messed up without wanting to."
