Mascherano: We have to pick ourselves up from Brazil defeat

The Barcelona defender was very critical of his country's performance against Neymar and Co.

“We have to pick ourselves up,” Javier Mascherano repeated two times after appearing in the mixed zone following Argentina’s 3-0 loss to Brazil in Belo Horizonte, which left them out of the qualifying spots for the World Cup. His tone of voice was low and reflective.

“Obviously things have to change,” he continued. “We have to pick ourselves up and deal with these days and find a way to change the dynamic of these results.

“We have to work on everything that we need to work on. We can't make excuses. It's a situation that we can't lie to ourselves about. We have to get out of it ourselves.

“We were controlling the game but after the first goal we fell apart terribly, this usually happens when you come from such a bad dynamic. In there cases, when you concede the first goal, it hits you.”

Philippe Coutinho scored the opening goal, with Neymar adding the second before half-time. Paulinho completed Argentina’s embarrassment after the break to leave Brazil top of the standings.
