They claim that Barça have asked about Kante as they look to plug the gap left by Paulinho

From Italy and, to be precise, the transfer expert himself Gianluca Di Marizo, he explains that Barcelona are interested in Chelsea's N'Golo Kante to cover the loss of Paulinho in the squad. Barça have enquired about Kante's asking price. What appears clear is that Chelsea could be open to selling the combative midfielder this summer as they're on the verge of signing Jorginho from Napoli.

Barcelona are making lots of moves in the transfer market and have asked about the situation of many top level midfielders in Europe. They want to know the whether a transfer is viable or not, so it makes sense that Kante would be a player they'd look at. However, the French midfielder isn't quite what Barcelona are searching for at the moment as they're after someone who is good on the ball and arrives late into the box. This is why Frenkie De Jong and Rabiot are top of the list.

Another Barcelona target, Eden Hazard, is also at Chelsea but his asking price has poured cold water over a deal at the moment. Chelsea want €200m for Hazard which isn't a fee Barcelona are willing to pay.
