Henrik Larsson, the 'psychologist' of Martin Braithwaite

The former Barca forward and Koeman's assistant has a good relationship with the Danish striker

Martin Braithwaite has more minutes than he does prestige in Ronald Koeman’s Barca side. In the summer an exit was discussed but now the Dane is the club’s centre forward. The former Leganes player has five goals in 10 starts the season, but it’s not his form in that regard that’s keeping him in the team. Koeman likes the generosity of his work, his pressing and that he never stops fighting. His professionalism and winning character have won over Koeman’s assistant Henrik Larsson. There is a good feeling between the two, and the Swede in his day had a similar role to Braithwaite now.

It came out before that Braithwaite has a ‘coach’ to help him keep his self-confidence high. He also works on his own with a fitness trainer. For his style of play, having that spark is essential, with power and explosivity two of his main weapons. Martin knows that because in terms of pure talent he’s not at the top of the squad.

Braithwaite’s delivery has seduced Larsson. Not just in games but in training too. Larsson won over Barcelona fans with his hard work and he sees the same in the Dane. Humble, the former Leganes forward listens attentively to Larsson’s advice, sporting and personal. Sometimes in training, they have informal chats on the grass - and language is an ally there.

If Braithwaite has shown anything this season it’s his ambition and desire, whether as a starter or coming on with five minutes to go. That’s seen in his goal celebrations and taking the initiative to have two goes from the penalty spot. His body language is clear. He believes in himself and is convinced that the work he does can be important for Barca. Larsson is the best mirror to look in.

Braithwaite has eight starts in a row in La Liga, but to keep himself in the side he needs to start getting more goals. Larsson did it and Martin needs to do the same to keep ahead of Griezmann, the returning Ansu Fati and potential arrival Memphis Depay.
