Talking to SPORT, Abidal said Dembele would be a success at Barça

But he doesn't think now is the time for Mbappe to move to Real Madrid

Eric Abidal has spoke to SPORT after being appointed as an ambassador for Barcelona on Wednesday.

The former French player spoke about a range of subjects -- the full interview will be available on Friday -- including young France stars Ousmane Dembele and Kylian Mbappe.

Dembele, 20, has been linked with Barça and Abidal feels he has the quality to make the move to Camp Nou this summer.

"Of course [he could play for Barça]," Abidal said. "Dembele's a good representative of the French academy system, which always brings through good players.

"I thought that last year when he left Rennes he would come to Barça because he has a lot of talent. Could he come now? I don't know. Anything is possible in football and it would be a great signing, although I don't know what type of player the club are looking for or if they want him.

"He's a dangerous player with a lot of quality, as he's shwon at Dortmund and with France. A player so young needs to play, but to come to Barcelona would also be a plus for him, to keep growing."

Dembele's international team-mate Mbappe, meanwhile, has been linked with a world record move from Monaco to Real Madrid. However, Abidal doesn't think now is the right time for the 18-year-old to leave.

"Looking at his situation, I like he should stay at Monaco," he opined. "He's been in the first team for five months, although it's been extraordinary everything he's done for the club, making differences.

"But before [leaving] he should confirm his status among the elite and do that by playing minutes. And on top of that, there's the World Cup coming up next summer..."
