La Real went 38 games unbeaten between 1979 and 1980

Barça are currently unbeaten in 32 league games

Barcelona's win against Girona on Saturday extended their unbeaten run in La Liga to 32 games, beating their previous record of 31 games set in 2010-11 by Pep Guardiola's side.

With that mark beaten, Barça are now searching for Real Sociedad's record, which was set in 1979 and 1980 when Alberto Ormaetxea's side went 38 games unbeaten, a run never matched before or after.

Between Luis Enrique Martinez and Ernesto Valverde, Barça have set a new club record and are within six games of La Real's record.

No one was capable of beating the Basque side from San Sebastian in the final six games of the 1978-79 season or in the first 32 matches of the 197-80 season -- a run which featured 22 wins and 16 draws (61 goals for and 21 against).

RUNNERS-UP

However, Real Sociedad were unable to end the season as champions. They lost their second last game of the season to Real Madrid and were knocked off top spot by Real Madrid, who won the title.

Barça are currently on their best ever run after ending last season with seven straight wins under Luis Enrique and starting the new campaign without a defeat in 25 games under Valverde -- 20 wins and five draws.

In the last 32 games in La Liga, Barcelona have accrued 86 points and Real Madrid just 66. The Catalan side's superiority is evident.
