More whistles than applause for Pique in Alicante
The Barcelona player was whistled from the start
There was applause and a banner in his favour, however
Gerard Pique was the protagonist in the first half of Spain vs Albania at the Rico Perez stadium in Alicante. There was a division in opinion over the defender, with whistles and applause, although the former beat out the latter. When Pique's name was read out the stadium announcer said it quickly so as not to leave the fans much time to protest.
In the stands there were banners of all types, for and against the player, and when he touched the ball for the first time, the whistles came, although they did not seem to affect the Barcelona centre-back.
