Real Sociedad make history as they stun Atletico to win Copa de la Reina

The Basques came from a goal down to deny Atleti the domestic double

Once again, David beat Goliath. Real Sociedad made history as they produced an historic comeback to win their first ever Copa del Rey and deny Atletico Madrid a domestic double.

An error worth a trophy

The game began wiith both sides in their expected roles. Atletico had control, while La Real pressed high and tried to counter. With hardly five minutes on the clock, Atletico had already had three corners. It didn't take long for their goal to arrive. With 15 minutes gone, Robles produced a brilliant cross and Esther scored.

It looked set to be another game in which Atletico did as they pleased but the reality proved different. Just three minutes later, an error from Lola Gallardo saw La Real level. The goalkeeper fumbled a weak shot from Palacios into her own net to give the Basquee side wings. That saw Atletico push again but they didn't come close to beating Quiñones again. La Real had chances on the counter, but had to defend well, too.

Prize for holding on

Atletico began the second half like a tornado. Chances came and went, though, with Quiñones and La Real's centre-backs frustrating the Rojiblancos. La Real held on and waited for a prize on the break -- and it arrived. In the 60th minute, a great move ended with a golazo that will be remembered forever. Palacios delivered the cross, Baños knocked the ball down and Nahikari turned it home.

Luck failed Atletico as they poured forward. They hit the woodwork twice in front of 17,000 supporters in Granada but there was to be no equaliser. La Real held on to win their first ever trophy in the women's game.

It was a fantastic game which once again showed the growth of women's football in Spain.
