A big decision went against the Dutch side in the first half on Wednesday

VAR is making its debut in the Champions League this week and it's done so in the worst possible way, with a huge scandal in the Ajax-Real Madrid game.

Madrid were all over the place in the first half and were second best against Ajax in the first leg of their round of 16 tie at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

In the 37th minute, Matthijs de Ligt headed a corner towards goal, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois fumbled the shot and Tagliafico headed in to make it 1-0. It was a deserved goal for the home side.

Surprisingly, Slovenian referee Damir Skomina ruled the goal out after consulting with VAR because of a supposed offside or foul against Tadic.

Curiously, Skomina should have been the VAR official for the match but a strange last minute change from UEFA saw him replace Polish ref Marciniak. More suspicion about Real Madrid, Florentino Perez and their spectahcular luck in the Cahmpions League.

The first scandolous and controversial VAR decision in the Champions League, with an Ajax goal disallowed because of a possible foul or offside against Tadic in a play which would have given the Dutch side teh advantage just before the break.
