The Catalan coach was impressed with the defender's debut

Laporte signed for City this week from Athletic for 65 million euros

After Manchester City beat West Bromwich Albion on Wednesday, Pep Guardiola spoke about the game and the transfer market in his post-game press conference.

City were one of the big movers in the final week of the window, paying Aymeric Laporte's 65 million euro release clause and failing to land Mahrez from Leicester.

Centre-back Laporte made his debut against West Brom and Guardiola liked what he saw, suggesting that the Frenchman could even end up being a bargain.

"Laporte plays 45 minutes and plays like that," Guardiola said. "People say he is expensive -- maybe he will prove to be cheap!

"Today, good players are so expensive. I said (to the board) 'if you can do a Laporte deal, do it, if not, no worry.' They said we can do it in the summer but we will try to do it now. It was easier because he had a buy-out clause."

On Mahrez, he added: "He is a Leicester player, I don't talk about players that play for other teams."
