Comment: Lluis Mascaro looks at the consequences of Madrid's loss at Valencia on Wednesday

The ‘crap-yourself-metre’ has been installed in Madrid. The loss at Mestalla has struck fear into Real Madrid and their media cavern, who now fear the worst: that they could lose a league which they thought was won. The problem is they had presumed their two games in hand were givens.

For now, they’ve lost the first against Valencia. Three points gone. And the same could happen against Celta Vigo, above all because of the panic which has now set in. Therefore, an imaginary advantage of seven points over Barça could stay at just one point. And one point is not much. Above all because there’s still a Clasico to come at the Bernabeu.

Madrid are now scared of losing the league, especially because they’ve won it just once in eight years. Los Blancos can’t allow another failure because Florentino Perez already has the axes ready: heads will roll if the title is not won. And not just any heads. The consequences of failing to win this league would splatter over all four corners of the Bernabeu.

Because Florentino likes to boast about the Champions League, but his bowels burst whenever his cronies ask him the same question: “What’s going on with us in La Liga?” The Madrid president can’t stand the humiliation he has been subject to, season after season, in a Spanish competition which he believes should “always be white.”
