Barça defender Pique surprise name on Spain's 55-man World Cup list

Pique has not featured for La Roja since retiring from international football in 2018

FC Barcelona defender Gerard Pique is one of the big surprises among the 55 players named in Spain's pre-list for the 2022 World Cup, according to Marca.

Pique, 35, has not featured to the national team since retiring in 2018 but does appear on the list handed to FIFA this week, as does Sergio Ramos.

But while Pique, who is not having his best season at Barça, where he is the fifth center-back behind Koundé, Araujo, Christensen and Eric Garcia, appears in the first cut, the chances of him finally being involved are minimal.

Other Barça players such as Eric Garcia, Marcos Alonso, Alejandro Balde, Pedri, Gavi, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets are in there. Héctor Bellerín is not, in whom Luis Enrique does not have so much confidence, nor is Sergi Roberto, who got injured against Athletic Club.

Sergio Ramos

PSG central defender Sergio Ramos is another of the big surprises on the list, which he shares a list defenders Laporte, Iñigo Martínez, Pau Torres, Eric García, Diego Llorente, Guillamón and Gerard Piqué himself.

Ramos has continued with the national team since the 2018 World Cup in Russia and already has a total of 180 caps. His last appearance was in March 2021 against Kosovo, when he played a total of four minutes during Euro 2021 qualifying.
