The coach said goodbye to Girona on Tuesday morning

Pablo Machin said goodbye to Girona on Tuesday in a press conference at Montilivi after he was confirmed as the new Sevilla coach.

Machin took over at the Catalan club and led them into La Liga in 2017. In their first-ever season in Spain's top flight, they then finished the campaign in 10th position.

However, he explained that he couldn't say no to a club like Sevilla, who will be in the Europa League next season.

"I have always valued the confidence Girona have shown in me," he said. "The three-year deal they offered me motivated me. I was close [to accepting the renewal offer] but when a train like Sevilla passes in front of you, you have to catch it.

Machin added: "It was an irresistible offer. It's the chance to work with a bigger team, at least in terms of the standings, and I think it was the moment. When a club [like Sevilla] comes to a coach like me, it's not easy to say no."

Speaking at a separate news conference, Sevilla sporting director Joaquin Caparros said Machin was a good fit for the club, who had three managers throughout last season.

“The club had a profile we were looking for and he fitted our profile,” Caparros said. “He is a very thorough and meticulous coach, who has a lot of potential and has enjoyed a magnificent campaign at Girona.

“His appointment has generated a lot of excitement and we can now all support him and wish him every success at the club."
