The Portuguese forward won the league and Champions League double

Lionel Messi came second while Neymar was third

FIFA's gala in London saw Cristiano Ronaldo defend his The Best award, which he won for the first time in January. The vote was taken by captains and coaches of national teams, as well as media and some fans. 

Ronaldo was voted the best player in the world with Messi second and Neymar third. In a year without a World Cup, Ronaldo's success with Real Madrid was decisive in the vote. 

Ronaldo picked up the award from Maradona and Ronaldo as well as FIFA president Gianni Infantino. 

Barcelona had some success with women's player Lieke Martens voted best player in that category although she could not attend the ceremony as she was with the Dutch national team squad.

Madrid's Zinedine Zidane was coach of the year, Gianluigi Buffon goalkeeper of the year and Olivier Giroud scored the best goal of the year, winning the Puskas Award.

The best XI of the year was: Buffon, Alves, Marcelo, Bonucci, Sergio Ramos, Kroos, Modric, Iniesta, Messi, Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo
