Putellas pulled one back for Barça but they couldn't come back in Italy

Barcelona's reign as European champions came to an end on Saturday as they were beaten 3-1 by Lyon in the Champions League final in Turin.

Barca went into this repeat of the 2019 final in completely different circumstances yet still fond themselves 3-0 down in the first half after goals from Amandine Henry, Ada Hegerberg and Catarina Macario.

Alexia Putellas pulled one back before the break to set up a second half onslaught but it was not to be as Lyon held on to win an eight European Cup and a sixth in the last seven years.

Poor defending cost Barca the game in the first half, with Henry opening the scoring from long range after just six minutes before Jenni Hermoso missed two good chances for Jonatan Giraldez's side.

Hegerberg doubled Lyon's lead in the 23rd minute with a header at the far post and then, after missing two more chances, set up Macario for the French side's third.

Putellas' brilliant finish from 10 yards got Barca back into the game as she timed her run perfectly to latch on to Caroline Graham Hansen's pass.

Giraldez threw caution to the win in the second half, with Asisat Oshoala, Lieke Martens and Claudia Pina all introduced, but Lyon stayed strong.

Patri Guijarro almost made things interesting with an incredible strike from 50 yards that hit the bar, while substitute Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic drove wide after good work from Oshoala.

Barça kept fighting until the end in an improved second half display but despite all the possession they had in and around the Lyon box, it was not to be their night at the Allianz Stadium.
