The defender has put pen to paper on a new deal with the Catalan club

Barcelona have announced the renewal of Jana Fernández, one of the team's most beloved homegrown players. The defender from Sant Esteve de Sesrovires will play in 'the club of her life' until at least 2025.

Jana Fernández's contract was due to expire in June 2023, but she wanted to extend her stay with Barcelona for two more seasons.

"I am thrilled," she said after signing. "This is the club of my life, where I have always dreamed of playing. That there will be many more years makes me very proud and satisfied."

At just 16 years and 9 months old, Jana Fernández made her debut with the first team, after having made her way through the ranks from the Barça Academy.

The Catalan is the second youngest player to officially debut since the professionalisation of the team. In the 2020-2021 season, she was finally officially promoted to the first team.

With Mapi León and Irene Paredes, the center-back position is well covered, but Jana Fernández is a good replacement due to her speed, strength and leadership. The academy player has acted as a center-back all her life, but Jonatan Giráldez also tried her out as a right-back.

Last season, she suffered a torn ACL, and right now she is in the final stretch of her recovery. Last Monday, she partially trained with the team.

“This injury has made me much more mature," she added. "The evolution of everything has been very good and it has made me learn a lot about football, about how things have to be taken and value where we are every day."
