Barcelona pushing to sign Man City and England star Keira Walsh

Barça are looking to strengthen in midfield after the injury to Alexia Putellas

"The squad is not closed and players can still come and leave." The words of Barcelona coach Jonatan Giraldez during preseason have opened the door to a busy week at the club as they look to add more signings following a spate of injuries.

With Alexia Putellas set to miss most of the season injured, plus the unexpected departure of Lieke Martens to Paris Saint-Germain, Barça have been forced to change their summer plans.

Nuria Rabano and Geyse were signed to replace Leile and Jenni Hermoso, while Lucy Bronze was brought in to add depth at right-back and Salma Paralluelo was signed as a unique opportunity that came up.

Sporting director Markel Zubizarreta did not plan to add a midfielder but the injury to Alexia and the ups and downs of a demanding season -- such as a minor knock for Aitana already -- have changed things.

Keira Walsh

Barça have been exploring options since Alexia got injured and the top target is England and Manchester City midfielder Keira Walsh.

The 25-year-old was one of the stars of the European Championships won by the Lionesses and SPORT have learned that she wants to move to Barça.

She has a contract with City until 2023 and the English side are reluctant to let her go but they were knocked out of the Champions League on Sunday to Real Madrid.

Zubizarreta was there to watch that game and Barça plan to step up their interest this week -- they want to close a deal as soon as possible.

Walsh may not be the last signing, either. Barça are also interested in players across Europe and beyond as they look to build a strong side for the upcoming campaign.
