Real Sociedad 1-0 Athletic Club: Oyarzabal penalty settles Copa del Rey final

The all-Basque final was won by La Real in Seville on Saturday

Real Sociedad ended a 34-year wait for a major trophy as they beat Athletic Bilbao 1-0 in the 2020 Copa del Rey final on Saturday.

Mikel Oyarzabal scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot as La Real edged the all-Basque final.

The San Sebastian side last won the cup in 1987 and they won La Liga twice in the early 1980s but they have been trophy-less at the top level since then.

Athletic, meanwhile, will get another chance to win the cup in two weeks when they play Barcelona in the 2021 final.

Oyarzabal's goal arrived in the 63rd minute after a lengthy VAR wait when Iñaki Martinez brought down Portu in the box.

The initial decision was a penalty and a red card but after the referee reviewed the monitor he changed the red for a yellow.

However, the penalty stood and Oyarzabal, who's missed against Barcelona and Manchester United in recent months converted.

Athletic attempted to regroup and push for an equaliser that would have forced extra-time but never really came close to breaking down La Real.

The fans will be celebrating in San Sebastian on Saturday. In contrast, the mood 100km away in Bilbao will not be as joyous.
