A Luke Shaw own goal was the difference between United and Barça on Wednesday

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Manchester United's win against Paris Saint-Germain gives them hope of beating Barcelona next week but was also realistic about his side's chances at Camp Nou.

A Luke Shaw own goal was the difference between the two sides on Wednesday as Barca won 1-0 at Old Trafford to take a slender advantage into next Tuesday's Champions League quarterfinal second leg.

United lost 2-0 at home to PSG in the last round but a 3-1 win in Paris saw them make it into the last eight against the odds.

Solskjaer, who was recently handed a permanent contract at the club, says that win will give his players belief next week but suggested Barca aren't as likely to crumble as PSG did.

"Of course the PSG performance away gives us hope and belief we can do it, but we know we are playing against probably the favourites for the tournament,” the coach said.

The Catalans are unbeaten in 30 matches at home in Europe and Solskjaer added: "It will be a greater achievement winning that one with the history of Barcelona. They are not used to losing at home.

"No doubt about it [we can do it]. We are a goal threat, be it Rom [Lukaku] or Rash [Rashford] or whoever is playing up there, we have to create chances for them.”

United failed to muster a shot on target on Wednesday but there were some impressive individual performances. Young midfielder Scott McTominay caught the eye.

“He was fantastic,” Solskjaer added. “Every time he plays for us he is improving. He’s a great athlete, wins his challenges and is quick on his feet. He started settling us, to be fair.

"We played a good team. We know you have to defend a lot without the ball and you might be tired when you get the chance yourself. We go there with one thing in my mind: we have to score."
