Guardiola: Man City not ready to fight for Champions League
City came from behind to beat Schalke on Wednesday night
Pep Guardiola sent a serious warning to his Manchester City players after they were forced to come from behind to beat Schalke in the Champions League on Wednesday, although he also highlighted their ability to react and win a complicated fixture.
The first half especially left him especially unsatisfied as Schalke recovered from Sergio Aguero's goal to take a 2-1 lead via two penalties.
"What's my opinion? It was an incredible result but we gifted them two penalties, [Otamendis'] red card... That's not good. We are not ready to fight for the Champions League," Guardiola warned. "We played well but we gave away easy balls. That cannot happen."
Late goals from Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling earned City a 3-2 win in the end. Pep added: "It was good, we played with incredible personality in the second half. Like at Anfield when we were losing 3-0. This [tie] isn't over. We gave too much to [Schalke] and they still have a chance."
On the use of VAR, Guardiola said: "I am a big fan, I back it. The first is a penalty and the second as well, but there's an offside. The red card was fair, too."
