Antonio Conte’s Blues dominated from the off, with Alvaro Morata going close twice and Eden Hazard crashing a long-distance drive against Jan Oblak’s upright, with the Slovenian stopper rooted to the spot.

Although Atletico went ahead through Antoine Griezmann’s 40th minute penalty, Chelsea were not dissuaded and pushed on to take three points and full control of Champions League Group C with one of English football’s finest away performances in some time.

David Luiz had pulled back Lucas Hernandez for Atletico’s penalty, slotted down the middle by Griezmann for his third goal in three at the new stadium, before Saul Niguez missed a huge chance on the stroke of half-time.

Had the midfielder converted with Thibaut Courtois stranded, Chelsea would have found themselves up against it in the second half.

However Saul fired wide and Chelsea capitalised, with live-wire Morata heading home Hazard’s excellent cross to level after an hour.

Chelsea continued to push but just when it looked like they weren’t going to get the goal their performance merited, an inspired move unlocked Atletico’s defence.

Bakayoko’s wonderful flick carved out a chance for Marcos Alonso to cross from the right of the area, on his right foot, and substitute Batshuayi tucked home clinically.
