Xavi has a new option for the pivot role in Barca's midfield

Xavi has been opting in recent games for a midfield with three players. He has moved away from the square formation that has given him such good results to place Joao Félix more open, on the left side of the attack. The absence of Frenkie de Jong through injury has also influenced his decision.

Without the Dutchman, Oriol Romeu is the player with the best characteristics to occupy the central midfield position in the three-man midfield. The player from Ulldecona, however, has had some problems getting the ball forward in recent games when the opposition have put him under pressure. For this reason, Xavi has brought Ilkay Gündogan deeper.

The defensive central midfield position is one of the few positions in the current squad that is not doubled up on. In fact, the coach would like to incorporate a player of these characteristics in the winter market, knowing that it will be difficult because of the problems the club has with Fair Play, with the registration of Gavi's new contract and the arrival of Vitor Roque being a priority.

So until another centre-half can arrive, in the meetings held between Xavi, Deco and other Barça sporting officials, solutions are being sought. And one of them is to try Andreas Christensen in that position. The Dane has already played in this position for both the Danish U-21 national team and Chelsea. He is used to it, although it is true that Barça's central midfield must be different to that of other teams, as it needs to have good positioning, but also a good outlet and quick ball circulation.

In fact, last season Xavi spoke of the possibility of the Dane playing as a central midfielder, with good words. "He is one of the best signings this season and in recent years. He's an extraordinary defender. And the way we play, the way we play, the way he filters balls, divides and understands the free man, he could be a midfielder playing at the back," the coach told the press conference.

So it wouldn't be strange to see Christensen in one of the next games playing in this position. It's an idea that Barça sporting director Deco likes too.
