Will Gerard Pique finally be chosen as one of the Barça captains?
The departure of Iniesta and Mascherano leaves two spots vacant
When Andres Iniesta leaves the club this summer there will be a new round of votes to pick the next captain. There will be no casting process as the candidates are already clear, but this could be a good opportunity for Gerard Pique, one of the most charismatic players in the squad, to finally become one of the four captains.
The position of captain in the Barça dressing room has been chosen with prudence and a certain amount of conservatism over the past few seasons. Last summer, the squad voted for Iniesta, Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets and Javier Mascherano, who has already left.
Iniesta's departure for China means there will be two vacant spots.
We can assumme that Messi and Busquets will continue to be the first two captains but two more places need to be filled.
One, you expect, will be taken by Gerard Pique, who has never been chosen as one of the captains before although he has worn the armband on the odd occasion, such as against Sporting Lisbon this season at Camp Nou.
There are other players that will hope to be chosen as captain due to their place in the team, their importance on a sporting level and their charisma and commitment. Marc-Andre ter Stegen looks like an ideal candidate, although Luis Suarez, a close friend of Messi and one of the most respected voices in the dressing room, could also be chosen.
