Victor Font: "The objective is to win the Champions League after Messi"
The candidate, who is standing for the Barça elections in 2021, says the club must prepare for life after the Argentine superstar has retired
One of the candidates for the Barça elections in 2021, Victor Font, told "El Mati de Catalunya Radio" that the biggest objective at the club is "create new goals at the club in order to keep winning Champions League titles after Messi".
Font is currently in Dubai but is expected to return to Spain soon. He wants to take over from current president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, and create a new era at Barça, "I'm not basing it on any previous model with Nuñez, Laporta, Rosell or Bartomeu. My objective is to create a project which exceeds the previous ones and looks to the future of the club."
The idea is to give youngsters the chance to create legacies at the club. "We need to avoid focusing simply on results and instead back players like Riqui Puig and Aleña, both who should be the reference of Barça's future."
Another member expected to form part of Font's plans is Xavi Hernandez who announced his retirement yesterday. "We've spoken a lot about the future of the club and the model we want. If we think about a Cruyff model, we need to people who know that the best. In that I refer to the coach and the sporting department."
And to wrap up his ideas, Font said this: "We need to keep winning Champions League titles, with Messi in another role at the club when he decides to hang up his boots. And, of course, the club must remain in the hands of the supporters."
