Valverde: I have the option to extend my contract by one year

The Barcelona coach is not in a rush to extend his terms at Camp Nou

Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde was asked before Sunday;s game against Girona about the latest regarding his contract.

President Josep Maria Bartomeu said on the radio that he would like to keep the coach for another year and that March would be the time to finalise an extension.

Valverde confirmed he has the chance to prolong his stay on the Camp Nou bench, but suggested he's in no hurry to commit.

“I have a contract at the moment until [the end of the season] and I have the option to extend it by a further year,” he said in a news conference.

“We know how things work in football. Seasons are long. We will have to see how things go and how the team progresses. It’s still September, there’s a long way to go [in the campaign].”

And when asked if he could bring his time at the club to an end because of exhaustion, he added in his usual dry tone: "We're in September so there's still time for me to get worn out."
