The Barça coach is honoured to have coached the legendary midfielder

Ernesto Valverde says Barcelona’s 1-0 win over Real Sociedad was special because it was Andres Iniesta’s last game for the club.

After the game, he said: “The signing from the moment I made the change until the end was really emotionally. When the fans are happy and want to send someone off like Andres in style, they give everything.”

Valverde defined Iniesta as a player “with a special magic on the pitch, he makes things which are difficult for everyone else look easy. And that’ the essence of his football. He’s allowed us to live football in his dimension.”

Speaking of the decision to take Iniesta off in the 81st minute, he added: “You never know when will be the best moment. I wanted it to be near the end of the game and I wanted Messi to come on first because they have a good connection. You hope they can combine and score.”

Finally, the Barça coach said it’s been “a privilege” to have trained Iniesta. “I suppose it’s the same for all the coaches he’s had. We’re talking about a unique player who will never be repeated. You won’t find another like him and I’ve been lucky enough to work with him.”
