Umtiti needs surgery after breaking bone in foot in Barça training

The defender's chances of leaving on loan in January have reduced dramatically

Barcelona have released a medical statement revealing that Samuel Umtiti broke a bone in his foot in training on Monday and must undergo surgery.

The club says he's fractured his fifth metatarsal and will be treated on Tuesday, striking a blow to any hopes of letting him out on loan this month.

Umtiti, 28, recently extended his contract at Camp Nou until 2026, an operation that allowed the club to reduce their wage bill and register Ferran Torres.

But his new deal wasn't a sign that he would remain at the club. Barça were still hopeful that he would agree a loan move elsewhere in January to resurrect his career.

With this injury, though, we will see what happens with the French defender, who is set for a while on the sidelines, making a departure almost impossible this month.
