Frenkie De Jong will show his worth in the 2018/19 Champions League. The Dutch midfielder helped Ajax secure qualification to the group stages of Europe's elite competition with a 0-0 draw away to Dynamo Kyiv. After winning 3-1 at home, a draw was all they needed to achieve their early season objective.
Against Kyiv, De Jong showed his quality and was key in his side not suffering last night. In the match, he played in midfield and was fantastic both in attack as well as defence. In contrast to other matches, he didn't slot in as a third centre back at times and was instead allowed to show his full array of talent up and down the pitch.
The arrival of Frenkie De Jong at Barcelona will need to wait until next year. The Dutch side, led by director of football Marc Overmars, won't let the player leave at this stage of the season. Barça made various offers but they were all rejected by Ajax. De Jong, in the mixed zone, spoke about wearing Barcelona's colours one day but said that he would stay at Ajax this summer. This way he can gain extra experience in the Champions League and, if nothing changes, sign for Barcelona next season.
