The strange case of Ilaix Moriba

He was not in the Barca squad even though they asked for him not to go with Spain U19

Ilaix Moriba was not included in Barca’s squad to face Elche in the 3-0 win, despite the club making him stay in the Catalan capital and not go with Spain U19s for training.

Koeman did not ask for him to stay and did not call him up, and given he missed out on Spain duty it was a surprise when he was not in the squad, while Konrad, Inaki Pena and Mingueza were included.

The coach has included him in some previous squads, seven in total this season, and handed him his debut in the Copa del Rey against Cornella, then La Liga against Alaves. It was a bittersweet night for him as he gave a goal away.

The game was on Feb 13 and has been, until now, the last minutes he’s had with the first team, despite the move to ask the RFEF not to include him in the U19s squad.

Iliaix did participate in Barca B’s 6-0 win over Hospitalet and will feature again at Lleida, a crucial game.
