The reason Barcelona ignored Suarez and did not sign Darwin Nunez

The forward was recommended to the Catalans by former Uruguayan hitman Luis Suarez

Benfica have announced Darwin Nunez’s move to Liverpool. The English side are going to pay up to 100m euros including add ons. He has netted 34 goals in 41 games this season and Jurgen Klopp has signed him to lead the line at Anfield, with Sadio Mane set to leave.

Barcelona could have signed him but decided not to, as revealed by Luis Suarez when speaking to Jijantes.

The former Barcelona forward had been asked his opinion on Nunez by Barcelona and he said: “Look at him, look after him, he’s very good, I see interesting things in him.”

Suarez explained in October 2021: “They could have signed him for 15-20 million to be my replacement and now they will have to pay 80, 90 or 100 million for him.”

Suarez, without a club after leaving Atletico Madrid at the end of his deal, explained why Barcelona didn’t go for him.

“I have 15 years of experience and I know something about strikers, but they told me he was very young and was at Almeria,” said Suarez. Nunez exploded in Portugal and then was out of the financial reach of the Catalans. Time proved Suarez right.
