The most controversial kits in Barcelona's history

SPORT revealed this week that Barça's shirt next season will be very different

SPORT exclusively revealed that Barcelona's shirt will take a radical turn next year, with the traditional stripes set to be abandoned by the club, which has created controversy among supporters and socios.

Never before in the club's history have they not used stripes of some form, although Nike have offered some more interesting designs in recent seasons.

The plan for next year is for Barça's blaugrana colours to feature on the home shirt in squares, in a design similar to Croatia's kit.

horizontal STRIPES

In the 2015/16 season, Barça left their traditional vertical stripes behind and replaced them with horizontal ones, something which had never happened since the foundation of the club.

There was also a debate in 2012-13, when the design featured just one main strip down the middle of the shirt, although the lines were slightly blurred.

Meanwhile, in the 2005-06 season, the kit was also contested because the stripes on the shirt were wider than usual and because the shorts were red.

CENTENARY KIT

Another kit which led to controversy was the design for the 1999-2000 season. That year, the blaugrana colours were split in hald on the chest, becoming a collectors' item.

One of the most polemic kits was the 1993-94 shirt, when the club had their stash supplied by Kappa. The debate around this one centered around the use of white on the shirt, with a white line running from the neck down the front of the jersey -- the colour of Real Madrid.

TREND-SETTING

Now, with their new squared shirt, the club are taking a bet on modernity and a design they hope will be trend-setting, two things which are very different from what the fans are looking for, although they must accept it.
