Barcelona have not given up hope of winning La Liga despite Clasico tumble
Nine finals. That’s what’s left for Barcelona if they want to win the double this season. The players still believe it’s possible. The Clasico hurt, a 2-1 defeat, but only their second in four months.
On another day it might have ended differently, with Messi and Ilaix hitting the woodwork and a penalty being called for, Mendy on Braithwaite.
In La Liga there are eight matches to go. Barcelona believe Atletico and Real Madrid will drop points. The former have been struggling since February, allowing 14 to slip away.
Madrid are still alive in the Champions League and that can be a distraction.
But before La Liga resumes for Barca, there is the Copa del Rey final next Saturday. They face Athletic at 9pm in Seville. They are aiming for their 31st.
Athletic Club, who already lost a cup final last weekend against Real Sociedad, are desperate for a trophy.
After that the other key match is in week 35 of the season, when Atletico Madrid visit Camp Nou. The weekend May 8-9 is marked in red ink.
