The press says that Argentina have to win their home games to qualify directly for the World Cup
Argentina’s disappointing 1-1 draw against Venezuela in Buenos Aires has led to the team receiving a lot of criticism in the Argentinian press, especially since Argentina are still only fifth in the standings.
“We don’t deserve this,” ran the headline in Olé on the homepage of its website. “There’s no rhythm, no reaction. Messi is suffering. Us too,” the newspaper added after the game against Venezuela, who are bottom of the Latin American World Cup qualifying group.
“Argentina are putting their World Cup dream at risk,” said La Nación.
Clarín criticised Icardi “He came as hope but failed when he was needed,” they said about the Inter forwards performance, despite the player scoring Argentina’s goal. “A draw that means we need to keep our calculators out,” lamented Página 12.
Argentina remain in the play-off spot in the group and would have to play against the winner of the Oceania group.
