They had a scheme to stop Messi scoring from a free-kick

Lionel Messi, Barcelona’s Argentine star, has been so good that opponents are working out how to stop hum individually and prevent him scoring his majestic free-kicks. They have tried in all sorts of ways, but few have managed it.

Rayo Vallecano pulled off an interesting trick on Sunday at Camp Nou, which worked, even though they lost 3-1 in the end. Rayo coach, Michel, spoke about it.

“We knew that we should cover the keeper’s post but also avoid that the ball goes under the wall. So Alex ran backwards and stopped the goal, this time it went well," he said.

What happened was that Alex Moreno ran back towards his own goal and headed Messi’s shot out of the top corner, over the bar for a corner - with the keeper beaten.
