The Atletico Madrid striker isn's convinced he will line up with Leo again

Atletico Madrid striker Luis Suarez spoke to Onda Cero on Thursday, once again re-living his exit from Barcelona and move to the Spanish capital last summer.

"Once Barça didn't count on me, we started to speak with Atletico," he said. "I didn't want to do anything until I was disassociated from Barça."

He added that during that time he travelled to Italy to "advance the process of getting an Italian passport in case I wanted to move there."

Suarez had offers from, among other clubs, Juventus. He stayed in Spain because "it wasn't such a radical change."

He said he went through some "really hard moments" and that Barça coach Ronald Koeman was tasked with calling him to say he wasn't in the club's plans and that they would excuse him from training if he wanted.

"It was the coach's decision in agreement with the board," Suarez said. Many people at Barça, like Lionel Messi, thought it was crazy to get rid of him.

On his friendship with Messi, Suarez continued: "We're friends away from football because of how we get on. We started having mates together and there was a good feeling... after that, we were meeting in the afternoons with the kids. We're the same age, our wives are friends, that helps, and the kids are a similar age as well.

"On occasions, we commented that we weren't going to be able to retire in the way we wanted and that playing together again is a utopia.

"I miss Leo, of course. We were always together, games, travelling... The nice thing is that we still talk and we will get together again when we can."

On Messi's contract, he said: "I was surprised to see it come out in the press. I don't understand why people can be so nasty. Barcelona are what they are today thanks to Leo. What Leo's given Barça, no other player has given any club."

And he denied not getting on with Antoine Griezmann: "It's a lie that we didn't want Griezmann to come, but you can't come out denying every story every day."
