Still going strong, Jordi Alba is important in this Barca side

The left back got another assist against Rayo Vallecano to help the team progress

Whoever wants to replace Jordi Alba before his time is mistaken. The player said recently he thinks he’s among the most hated in the sport for the way he plays, “I’m really annoying,” he admitted. He gets up and down the left flank and links with Leo Messi time and again. They combined at Vallecas and Alba grabbed his ninth assist of the season and is heading for 75 for the club, showing how important he has been.

When Ronald Koeman arrived, many wanted him to oust Alba but his call was not like the ones he made to Rakitic and Luis Suarez. He calmed Alba, down, put his confidence in him and told him he wanted him at full power, ahead of an intense season.

Said and done. You appreciate Alba more when he’s not there, like at Vallecas before he came on. Junior Firpo struggled.

One of the criticisms of Alba is that he has problems in defence. “It’s not my main quality, I know, but I’ve improved a lot,” he said. Alvaro left Junior for dead for the goal. He’s not the solution.

Alejandro Balde is doing well in the B team but Alba has no real replacement. He’s looking after himself and his nine seasons at the club make him important there too.

Alba doesn’t just link with Messi. He has four assists for Griezmann, two for De Jong and two for Ansu Fati. He’s still necessary.
