Sergino Dest, obsessed with correcting his defensive mistakes

The right back is mature and self critical and looking to improve

Conscious that he and the team must improve, Sergino Dest is not happy with his own season and knows he can do better. The American right-back has a big future ahead of him and knows he has to keep growing both defensively and going forward.

Sergi Roberto’s injuries have given Dest a bigger role this season than he might have had. He arrived on October 1, without much time to adapt but quickly became a regular for Ronald Koeman. He’s played 27 matches and has only missed nine games.

Dest carefully studies the videotapes to help him improve in the back four, working on his marking, and ball and set-piece construction. He is already a mature player at age 20, knowing he has to keep working.

He’s very self-critical and in that sense is a similar character to Frenkie de Jong, never willing to throw in the towel. The Dutchman adapted slowly in his first year and has only burst into life in this campaign. Both played at Ajax, the same style, position play and touch football. Dest has in De Jong a clear reflection of what he wants to do.

He had one of his best games in the 2-0 win over Sevilla, a big side. He worked with more freedom to attack as a right wing-back and even right-winger at times, and looked comfortable. It’s harder for him in a back four. He hit the post and got forward well.

Mentally Dest is only angry with himself because he knows he has not yet got to his best level. He was sad about his PSG performance but the team supported him after it.
