The Uruguayan defender published a statement to give his point of view

Ronald Araujo will be taking surgery on his thigh muscle tear and published a statement to explain why he had taken that decision, rather than a more conservative treatment. Now he seems poised to miss the World Cup with Uruguay.

“I want to make the reasons I took my decision clear, to avoid speculation,” wrote the Uruguayan.

“I love my country and my national team. After consulting various professionals, we decided surgery was the best thing to do. It’s not about choosing one thing or another, but health and returning to 100 per cent as soon as possible.

“In personal terms these are very difficult moments and I’m taking advantage of them to thank everyone for the support I am receiving.

“With faith and hard work I will give my best to be back as soon as possible.”

He received a message of support from former Barcelona striker Luis Suarez.

“Great Ronald! You’re right and we give you all our support. Recovering well is the most important thing, and coming back stronger.”
