Riqui Puig not thinking about leaving Barça despite contract extension

The midfielder's deal runs until 2023 now and he's determined to stay this month

Riqui Puig is standing firm on his idea to remain at Barcelona beyond the end of the January transfer window and not go out on loan, so the extension of his contract until 2023, which Barça executed a while ago, will not have any influence on his decision.

The midfielder's plan has not varied. He wants to triumph at Barça and convince Ronald Koeman he deserves a place in the team. His teammate Carles Aleña has decided to leave, with a loan move to Getafe close, but Puig feels his qualities are best suited to Barça.

Puig, 21, signed a deal until 2021 in 2018 but that contract included an option for the terms to be extended by an additional two years. That was taken up some time ago, so his situation hasn't changed. He is tied to Barça until 2023.

However, he still has offers, including one from Real Betis, who would like to take him on loan until the end of the season and give him regular football.

That's something that's not likely to happen at Barça under Dutch coach Koeman, who's urged him to leave for six months.

Las elecciones pueden cambiar cosas

On Jan. 24 a new president will be elected and will come in with new ideas. The majority of the candidates have said they will back Koeman but a coaching change could happen at some point.

Regardless of that, though, Riqui is focused on succeeding at Barça and winning his place in the team, despite only playing 78 minutes this season across five games.
