Real Sociedad 1-6 Barcelona: Koeman's stars hot on Atletico Madrid's tail

This was a megasmashing of the kind we don't see all too often at these heights

It doesn’t get better than this. Well, it might. We don’t know what the ceiling of this Barcelona side is. Players like Pedri, Ilaix, Oscar Mingueza and Co could improve a lot in the years to come.

But for now, this will do. It was a spectacular performance that made a mockery of Barcelona’s historic problems at Anoeta, complete with some superb goals.

Antoine Griezmann broke the deadlock after Ousmane Dembele had a shot deflected, and Sergino Dest finished well from Lionel Messi’s precision pass.

At the other end, Marc-Andre ter Stegen made two great saves to deny Alexander Isak.

The game exploded in the second half, with Barcelona ripping La Real to shreds.

Dest struck again, before Messi finished well from Sergio Busquets’s lofted through ball.

Dembele, who had a goal harshly ruled out for offside, struck the fifth with a dazzling solo dribble.

And after Ander Barrenetxea’s screamer for Real Sociedad, Barca scored their best goal. A wonderful team construction involving Ilaix and Riqui Puig, eventually finished by Messi from Alba’s cut-back.

Barcelona are four points behind Atletico Madrid with 10 games to go. As things stand, the Catalans are the best team in the league and the capital club are holding on to stop spot by the skin of their teeth.
