The positives of the international break for Barcelona

The Catalans will benefit in some ways from the stoppage in domestic action

Club coaches cross their fingers during international breaks and hope their players make it home in good condition. During the two weeks to come most of Barcelona’s squad will be playing for their counties. There will be 14 players heading out to play international football.

However it’s important to find reasons to be positive too. Always look on the bright side of life. And at Barcelona things have been good lately, so here are the positives.

Leo Messi will get some rest. The Barcelona captain is smiling again. He has 18 goals in his last 14 league games and is in great form. At 33 he will enjoy a nice break and arrive at the final stage of the season in top condition.

Araujo can find fitness. The Uruguayan came on at the end of two recent matches but now he can get back into his best shape without pressure and try and earn a place in the starting line up against Real Valladolid ahead of the Clasico.

Sergi Roberto and Gerard Pique return. These two weeks off are two more weeks for the two Catalans to get back from injury, both are expected to be fit come the next league game.

Mental disconnection. Barcelona have been fighting for three months impeccably and intensely for La Liga. They have mounted fine comebacks, including to get to the Copa del Rey final. It takes a toll. And while those playing for their countries will not rest physically, mentally they can change their scene and come back with full batteries for the run-in.

New experiences. Youngsters like Pedri will gain a lot from playing for his country, while Ousmane Dembele will be thrilled to be back with France. Trincao and Pjanic getting game time is welcome too for them. There are upsides.

Time to think about next season. The staff and Ronald Koeman can have meetings with Joan Laporta to discuss the club’s needs. With the break there is more time to step back and look at the bigger picture.
