How Oscar Mingueza won over Ronald Koeman

The youngster has featured regularly for the Dutchman this season at the back

Oscar Mingueza has been one of the big Barca surprises this season. The former B team reserve has earned a spot in the first team. It’s thanks to his effort and intensity in every game and training session, but also the confidence that Ronald Koeman has in him.

“Mingueza has improved a lot, he has played in different positions and grown, thanks to his team-mates too,” said Koeman. “I have no fear in playing a youngster against PSG. He deserves to be there. If they give you the chance you have to take it with both hands.”

Everything indicates that he will likely be starting against the French side on Tuesday night, either at right back or at centre back.

Despite some errors in terms of coverage and marking, with Koeman has tried to correct, Mingueza has kept his place too because of his capacity to learn, assimilate new concepts and push himself onwards in training. Koeman recognises something crucial in him, the will to learn when he makes a mistake now and again.
