Oleguer was speaking to the show Tot Costa on Catalunya Radio on Friday

Oleguer Presas has given his support to Gerard Pique in an inteview on the show Tot Costa on Catalunya Radio. The former Barcelona player has lamented that any comments from footballers bring such critical analysis.

"When you do something like that, you are aware of what could happen and the consequences, so you do it with the conviction that it's what has to be done," he said.

"The serious thing is not the tweet, but not being able to do it. You can't post a tweet for freedom of expression or for the people's right to decide. That's what needs to be re-thought by those making this a controversy."

Oleguer defender Pique's tweet: "I think it's a brave tweet, without doubt. Because we all know that these type of comments usually have the same responses. Pique's position is not the newsworthy thing here, but that the majority of athletes don't give their opinion freely. Everyone is quiet, no one gives their point of view."

Now working on renewable energy pojects and social movements in Sabadell, Oleguer said that he left football because he was "tired of some of the dymanics."

On what's happening in Catalonia, the former defender added: "I'm watching it all very intensely, seeing serious actions, but with some very interesting responses from the citizens. And I am trying to help with what I can to defend the right of the Catalan people. What's surprising is the response from the Spanish state."
