Barcelona published a medical statement on Wednesday confirming Lionel Messi has a thigh injury.

He sustained the problem during the clash with Villarreal on Tuesday night, which Barcelona won 2-1.

Messi was making his first start of the season after a calf injury he suffered in the summer.

Coach Ernesto Valverde said that he took Messi off at half-time against Villarreal “for precaution”.

Barcelona’s medical statement said Messi suffered “an elongation of the adductor in the left leg”, which is a thigh strain.

The Catalans did not explain the absence time for Messi.

It seems unlikely he will be fit to face Getafe on Saturday at 4pm in the Spanish capital. Instead he may try to make it back to face Inter Milan on Wednesday in the Champions League.

In these situations the expected injury absence is between five and ten days. If he doesn’t make it to play Inter, he’ll likely be back to face Sevilla at home the next weekend, October 6.
